It's a free country--take your dolls wherever you want to! Taking along a camera is a good idea if you're self-conscious, though.
I'm 46, and I've begun taking a doll or two along when I travel, so I won't miss them so much! I hate to leave my girls for a whole weekend.
But the only place I've actually taken one out to is AGPC, and lots of people were carrying dolls around in there!
My husband is very funny about my dolls... infact he encourages me to take them with me places (like even walmart) and when I get embaressed he tells me he'll carry them!
Of course my husband was a firefighter and left the service after being around too much death (he was a paramedic, rescue diver- i.e. body recovery, high angle rope specialist... etc)
He always tells me life is too short... never be ashamed of the things that make you happy... but even with that kind of support I still can't get up ALL the courage in the world =D
Oh thank you for this thread! This has been nagging me for the longest. I love my dolls and I am not ahamed of my addiction to them.
I wish I could put those words into action. I do take them out with me a lot, but I want to be more free with it and not feel so self conscious.
DH and my kids will not let me take a dollie with me say if we go out to a restaurant or a movie...somewhere real public.
I take them in my back yard sometimes. I saw that dollie on the cruise too...wow I admire her Mommy! [img]wink.gif[/img]

Several middle eastern(Al Qaeda and Hamas mostly) bombs HAVE been hidden in dolls. They also have been known to use gun cotton to make any soft bodied toy into a deadly weapon. So don't argue with any policeman/security that says your AG can't come.

Here's an idea. I've brought my dolls to a few places where the people said they wanted to see my dolls. But I would still get nervous carrying them around, especially when I brought them to school for a presentation. So I put them inside a large tote bag while carrying them around. Put your doll inside a large tote bag or backpack so you can hide her away when you are feeling self-conscious. Then bring her out if you begin to feel more comfortable.
I've also heard on the board people who sometimes bring a doll when they go alone to the movies. I've never actually tried this(then again I don't go to many movies), but since it's dark you can hold your doll in the movie and carry her again in a bag going in and out. Another idea is if you have her in your car. You can leave the doll in the car and drive with her but only take her out if you feel comfortable. But definitely the bag thing works really well.
I do not have the guts to take one of them out in public yet...
I know I will suffer much ridicule from my family and possibly from passerbys. I know, I know...it shouldn't matter, but I don't have really high self esteem and something like that will just knock me down.
I did, however, bring Addy to my Thesis and Seminar class one evening becuase one of the women in my class was doing her thesis on the slave narratives and when I told her Addy's story she really wanted to see her.
I brought her in in a plastic bag, and only took her out for a little while.
I felt funny having a doll with me and did get some strange looks from others in the class.
I don't know if I have the guts to bring one of the girls out again, but let us know how it goes if you do decide to bring one of them with you to the park.
I guess I should add, since I said I wouldn't walk around town with my dolls, that I have brought them in to work on a few occasions- dressed in handmade dresses to show off. I also have 2 mini dolls on my desk.
But they are always in a tote bag going up to the office- so only people who stop by my cube can see them.

When dd and I were talking about our possible trip to AGPNY this Saturday, she told me that she *was* bringing Kit, because she just was getting "bored hanging around here all the time." She also told me I *was* bringing Addy, too.
Of course I think that most of us would bring one to AGP, and I would, although I don't know what dh would say, because we'd also be lugging them around NYC.
As I've said, dd, 7, is bringing Kit everywhere. We/she got quite a few comments (positive ones) at Costco last week. She was behind me as we were leaving (out of this guy's sight). Kit was in the shopping cart, beside 18 month old ds, and he did a double take. He said, "I thought she was a real baby!"
So--although lots of people do take their dolls, and it's easy to say, "Yes, take her, take her," in reality it might create an odd situation.
I do agree with GreyMist that taking photos can help it seem more "natural."
And Skittl--dd did the Flat Stanley project at school last year and my dad took "Flat Amanda" everywhere and took pictures, bless his heart!
I took Nellie with me on the plane to Chicago last year, sticking out of my tote bag. I got many comments but they were all positive. Everyone loved her! [img]biggrin.gif[/img]
I wish I was brave enough to take my dolls around town with me. I would maybe take one on a trip sometime if my husband didn't mind. If we ever go to Williamsburg I will definitely take Felicity. [img]biggrin.gif[/img]
